Beginning Blog - Erinn#1

Me.. Moi.. Míse..

Hiya, my name's Erinn Whitty. I recently turned 23 and I'm a final year student studying the Internet of Things at Waterford Institute of Technology.

I've lived in Waterford my whole life and hope to travel once I'm finished my degree. I plan to visit Canada at the end of this year and potentially find full-time employment there.

Being in my final year I'm kept quite busy with assignments and work, however, when the opportunity arises, I enjoy reading, watching movies or tv shows, and playing video games.

"Everything happens for a reason."

Walt Disney Animation Studios' Tangled, released in 2010, is my all-time favourite movie. I have watched it an unprecedented amount of times and can recite all the words. I refer to Tangled as my comfort movie;

"Comfort movies don't have to be low energy or low stakes to be soothing; they simply have to evoke a certain mood or atmosphere, or transport viewers to a world they'll want to revisit."

The story follows a beautiful princess Rapunzel, who has been locked away in a tower since she was captured as a baby by an old woman, Mother Gothel. Her magical long blonde hair has the power to provide eternal youth, and the evil Gothel uses this power to keep her young. At the age of 18, Rapunzel becomes curious about the outside world, and when a prince uses her tower as a refuge, she asks him to help her escape.

Ask any reader and they'll tell you choosing a favourite book is near impossible. It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover is a beautiful yet tragic story packed with riveting drama and painful truths. This book powerfully illustrates the devastation of abuse—and the strength of the survivors.

It Ends with Us follows a girl, Lily Bloom, who has just moved to Boston and is ready to start her life after college. Lily then meets a guy named Ryle and she falls for him. As she is developing feelings for Ryle, Atlas, her first love, reappears and challenges the relationship between Lily and Ryle.

Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale-hero shooter game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts.

I have a love-hate relationship with this game, I love sitting down to play it but usually rage-quit after being third-partied.

However, even if I'm not playing the game, I'm usually watching people play it on the live streaming service Twitch.

USV Project Introduction

As part of my fourth-year module, Internet of Things Applications with Jason Berry, we embarked on a major collaborative project to build a search and rescue unmanned service vessel (USV).

The project team includes students from IoT year 2, BEng in Electronics Ord year 3, my class IoT year 4, a Masters student in Electronics, and a Masters student in Innovative Technologies. Each team was allocated certain areas of the project depending on their capabilities.

Before each team got to work, we had to research existing projects, proposed product design, and potential schools to be involved. We presented this research through a short presentation using Prezi

From this project, I would like to develop not only my computing skills but also my teamwork and management skills to help me excel in my future career. I hope to express my creativity when designing our dashboard and help with design decisions for the USV itself.
